Exactly. And it's the only way to keep one's honor intact.

I think the better lesson here is to not cheat on your spouse in the first place...

First of all, I think that confession is good for one's mental health when otherwise one would be carrying around a burden of secret guilt and fear of discovery.
Second, I respect a man that is able to admit his mistakes and ask for forgiveness. Admitting your mistake is the first step toward correcting it.
Third, choose your mate wisely. He married someone that he had trouble remaining faithful to, someone of questionable mental stability given her latest actions.
He waited 15 years to confess. If he was going to do it...he should have 15 years ago.
As far a being faithful...this is something I NEVER worry about from my husband. I chose well...the second time.

You very well could be right. That kind of "confession" would "tweek" a wife off.

I'm wondering what the heck brought the subject up? I understand that telling her might have relieved the burden of guilt, but what...did he think the statute of limitations was up and just blurt it out at the dinner table, or when she was about to clean the Taurus or what? Was there an interrogation underway? Did she find a 15 year old pair of panties in his drawer?

He cheated on his wife and then continued to lie about it for fifteen years.

That woman has a shotgun temper with a hair trigger.
