(Sept. 11) -- A Queens man died after he was shot in the head as he attempted to protect his father from would-be robbers at the family home Wednesday, according to New York news reports.
The suspects apparently waited for the father, Romeo Antoniello, who was coming home with the day's cash from the family pizzeria nearby, police told the New York Daily News.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, as Antoniello approached his front door, two men jumped on him and started pistol-whipping him, the Daily News reported.
That's when Antoniello's son, Gerardo Antoniello, 29, came to his father's aid. One of the suspects shot him in the head and ran off. His parents called another son, Carmine Antoniello -- a New York city police officer. He called 911.
Gerardo Antoniello was taken to a nearby hospital. He was taken off life support Thursday morning, and pronounced dead.
Police are still searching for the shooter.
According to the New York Post, Romeo Antoniello is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
