Honestly, I'm not surprised by this story. Next time you are at the range look around at some of the people there; or, think of some of the horror stories you read on the forum. There are too many people out there that do not seek out, or were never exposed to proper firearm handling and safety; clearly, Mr. Looney is one of them. Further, his girlfriend, no matter what her level of firearm knowledge/experience/education was, she should have known better. Tragic story; I am sorry to hear it happened.

Probably too stupid to figure out how to reproduce...... We can only hope.

Simple FTF, on all cylinders that is. What a stupid thing to do. It proves nothing to put it to your head, other than you are already empty where you are aiming at.

Man Teaching Gun Safety Shoots Himself
(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A Missouri man who was teaching his girlfriend about firearm safety on Friday pointed a gun at his head to prove a point and accidentally shot himself dead.
The Jefferson County Sheriff said that James Looney, 40, of Imperial, Mo., was teaching his girlfriend about the different safety mechanisms on guns by putting guns to his head and asking her if they would go off. The first two guns did not go off, but the third gun actually fired.
Looney was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead the next morning.
According to witnesses, Looney was going to take his girlfriend to the shooting range the next day, but insisted on firearm safety the day prior.
People accidentally shooting themselves in the head isn't uncommon. Earlier this month, a Tennessee man suffered a non life-threatening injury after he accidentally shot himself in the head. Last month, a Florida man was handling an unfamiliar gun when it went off and shot him in the head .

That's puttin' your money where your mouth is ... or, at least, puttin' your gun where your head is.
Unbelievably dumb, yes.
Man Shoots Self In Head Trying To Prove Gun Safety
Well, he proved it. Good for him.
I'd say he also proved something else to his girlfriend: that he might well be a good provider, but it's a roll of the dice as to how long that might be.

Does anyone know who to contact so we can nominate this guy for a Darwin award?
Quite a tragedy he not only ruined his life, but the life of his girlfriend who will surely be a hoplophobic for life.
This seems the equivalent of a Dad teaching his kid to drive: "Make sure to wear your seatbelt son, it will keep you from getting seriously hurt in an accident."
The Dad then precedes to drive into a wall at 70mph just to make sure his son understands the point.
Unbelievably stupid, but I guess that is what Darwin intended.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as too stupid to reproduce. It's usually the dumbest people that have whole litters of kids.

Note to prospective firearms safety instructors:
Learn and practice firearms safety BEFORE you attempt to teach it!
ALWAYS carry! - NEVER tell!

Do you have a list of classes where they teach the gun to the head technique? I can think of some people I want to send to those classes.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

you can't fix stupid.
common sense isn't common at all.
