HAZARD, Ky. — Kentucky state police say a 15-year veteran has been placed on administrative leave after shooting and killing a suspect who had pointed a gun at him.
Trooper Tony Watts, spokesman for state police post 13 in Hazard, says Trooper Ben McCray was conducting a welfare check in the Jackhorn community of Letcher County when the shooting occurred.
Watts says in a news release that when McCray went to the home of Terry Wayne Taulbee on Friday, Taulbee displayed a weapon, approached the trooper and refused to comply with a demand to put down the weapon.
Watts says when the suspect raised the weapon in the direction of McCray, McCray fired. Taulbee was pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County coroner.
McCray was not injured. The incident is under investigation.
