Officers investigating the shooting of a sheriff's deputy have been involved in a foot chase, and reports are the person being chased has been shot. The chase was in a field not far from the scene where the deputy was shot.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff said a deputy who suffered a gunshot wound in the 3600 block of S. Rock Rd is expected to survive. The shooting location is near McConnell Air Force Base.
Sheriff Bob Hinshaw said the deputy was responding to a larceny when he was shot. Hinshaw said the deputy is out of surgery and is in stable condition. Hinshaw said the deputy was shot twice, in the torso and in the leg.
Authorities believe the suspect is in a nearby house in the 3600 block of South Rock Road. It is believed he has the deputy's pistol. Sheriff Hinshaw said officers have not made contact with the suspect. Scanner traffic indicates authorities are using a robot to gain access to the house.
Sheriff Hinshaw said the suspect is believed to be in his 20s and was recently paroled. Hinshaw said the shooting could possibly have been a setup.
The deputy is 26-years-old and has been on the force for a year and a half. Sheriff Hinshaw said this is his first assignment in law enforcement.
Rock Road is closed from McConnell Air Force Base to 47th Street South.
Wineteer Elementary has been placed on lockdown. Other Derby school students who live in the cordoned-off area are being dropped off at Wineteer, and parents will have to come to the school to pick up those students.
