GROVEPORT, Ohio (AP) — An 80-year-old Ohio man is recovering from a week in which he was beaten during a home invasion and then shot while trying to learn about guns.
Ralph Needs says he wouldn’t want anyone else to experience what he’s been through.
He was tied up and pistol-whipped when at least three intruders broke into his Columbus area home on Sept. 20. Needs’ nose was broken and his pickup truck, a computer and credit cards were taken.
Four days later, Needs was shot in the hand during a self-defense lesson. A 9 mm pistol went off as one of his sons was loading it.
Groveport police say it was an accident, so there will be no charges. No one has been arrested in the assault, but one person
Holy crap! This guy just can't win.

Was it an actual lesson or was it just this guys son showing him guns.Four days later, Needs was shot in the hand during a self-defense lesson. A 9 mm pistol went off as one of his sons was loading it.
By calling it a Self-Defense Class their making it sound like an NRA Class or CCW Class. I'm betting it wasn't.

Wow, how did this guy make it to 80 with luck like that?
Don't believe what you hear and only half of what you see!
Look at it this way in one week he survived an armed robbery and being shot in a completely separate incident. Sounds pretty lucky to me.
Poor guy, that would suck.

I always have to wonder what physically transpired to lead to this event.
Son has gun, is talking, explaining, while loading gun. Obviously breaking at least the rule on muzzle direction awareness. Then the gun is loaded and son pulls trigger. Rule on finger off trigger ignored somehow. At the exact same time the muzzle rule is broken.
I guess that's easy enough to avoid.
As well meaning as his son was... one needs to know their own limitations!

I guess he's a "one-tenth of one percenter," truly (referencing the 0.13% of injuries due to firearms that occurred between 1999-2006: click).
My hat's off, to him. What a guy.
I would tell him that there's no need to buy a lottery ticket 'this week'...

Maybe his son was showing him what could have happened
