Angry embarrassment: Toronto "assault rifle" seized

"This is the first Chinese-made assault rifle I've seen," said Det. Robin Dey. "This weapon is made for only one thing and that is to kill people."

Dey alleged 30 rounds of ammunition for the SKS assault rifle were found in a clip.

"These bullets can go through a cinder block," he said yesterday. "They can go through a police vest without a problem."

I warn you, it's pretty dumb. Iv never heard of an assault rifle that uses "clips"

These people write this stuff, then the uneducated public sees it and laps it up like druggies... I don't live in Canada but I feel bad for their people after reading this. This was obviously a drug raid, but do they really need to take it as an opportunity to spread lies and ignorance?

I've got some Chinese "assault" rifles.

If the fools really knew what they could shoot through, they would lie awake at night unable to sleep.

Yes...they could go through a police vest without a problem as can most other rifle rounds.

    Big deal.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

    Lots of danger here...

--A Chinese-made assault rifle capable of firing bullets that can penetrate a cinder block...

--"gang stash house" and arrested three brothers.

--Four of the five guns seized were loaded, police said.

--"This weapon is made for only one thing and that is to kill people."

...30 rounds of ammunition for the SKS assault rifle were found in a clip (whatever that is...)

"These bullets can go through a cinder block,"

--"They can go through a police vest without a problem."

--one boy, who was 11 years old, had access to the weapons.

--"These weapons were strewn around the house and were loaded,"

--"The younger children could have picked up those weapons and it could have been a disaster."

--Officers suspect the weapons belong to gang members

--"We believe we have come across a gang stash house for weapons,"

Det. Robin Dey is simply ignorant.

So says this guy, with his hunting purpose SKS...

An SKS as used by many people worldwide as a survival rifle which does include hunting. Duh!

Or how about Det. Robin Dey has no clue what he's talking about?!
I bet he thinks AR15 format rifles aren't/can't/shouldn't be used for hunting either.

Ar15 chambered in 6.8 SPC, which can also shoot through relatively weak cinder block

Unfortunately, in Canada they can't. All AR15 format rifles are classified as restricted firearms. This means they may be transported to and from an approved range or to and from a gunsmith only. And only with an authorization (valid for five years generally) to do so.

Still think California has it bad?

For once the term "clip" is correct. The SKS DOES use a clip to load the fixed magazine...all though from the way it's worded, they probably do mean magazine.

    Why is everyone upset ?

It's CANADA - they have SIGNIFICANTLY More Gun Control Laws than
    the U.S.

    [url]http://www.canadianlawsite.ca/gunlaws.htm[url]

    Requirement to Own a Firearm

Anyone in Canada who owns or wants to own a firearm must do the following:

    1. Take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC);

    2. Pass the the CGSC test, or show that they have already taken the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and passed the test (good for life, unless the applicant is later subject to a prohibition order); or

    3. Pass (or have already passed) the test without taking the course; or show that they have taken a course before January 1, 1995, approved by the Attorney General of Manitoba or Quebec; or

    4. Have a Chief Firearms Officer certify that their knowledge of firearms laws and safe handling practices meets the standards set out in the Regulations (only for adults who have owned a firearm since January 1, 1979).

    5. Obtain a licence. This law became effective December 1, 1998. Prior to that date in order to purchase and own a firearm one must have had a FAC. "FAC" stands for Firearms Acquisition Certificate. It was the certificate needed to get a firearm before December 1, 1998. As long as they are valid, FACs can act as licences.

    ----------------------------------

The Criminal Code requires all firearms owned on December 1, 1998, to be registered by January 1, 2003.

    Starting December 1, 1998:

    * all imported firearms must be registered when they enter Canada; and
    * individuals must register any firearms that are transferred to them.

To register, firearm owners need one of the following:

    * a valid Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC), which serves as a licence; or
    * a licence that covers the class (and for prohibited firearms, the grandfathered class) of the firearm being registered.
