West Hartford Man Wounded In Hunting Accident -- Courant.com

CANAAN - A West Hartford man out hunting Saturday morning on the open day for small game was wounded in the face, neck and arm by bird shot fired by another hunter across a field who aimed at a pheasant, state conservation police said.

Peter Paveglio, 35, of West Hartford was conscious and alert after the hunting-related shooting at the state's Robbins Swamp Wildlife Management Area on Route 126, according to Dennis Schain, a spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection.

Paveglio was brought to Sharon Hospital for treatment of what DEP police called non-life threatening injuries.

The hunter who fired the shot, Alden Brooks, 65, of 26 Falls Ave., Waterbury, was charged with second-degree negligent hunting.

Brooks was hunting with three other people and Paveglio was with another hunter crossing an open field when Brook fired at a pheasant, killing the bird and wounding Paveglio. The two men were about 75 yards apart, Schain said.

Brooks was released on a written promise to appear in court at Bantam on Nov. 2. The incident is still under investigation.

This is the reason that I stopped deer hunting in Upper Michigan years ago. As the sun would start to come up, the woods appeared to be sprinkled with an 'orange' salt shaker...too dangerous (unless you had access to huge plots of private land, and even that was sometimes overrun with 'wanderers'.).

What ... no blaze orange requirement for small game there? Almost anyone can see blaze orange at 75 yds, even through the heaviest of covers.

When I lived in Petersham, Massachusetts, there was a guy who had an iron sculpture of a deer in his front yard. Every deer season he would put a red bandanna around its neck.

How we behave as gun owners is important. Posturing and threatening does not serve us well in the public eye.

Yes, CT requires something like 300 square inches of blaze orange including some on the head. I hunted New England for 30+ years and I can assure you that some foliage is so dense you'd miss a guy in blaze orange from 10 yards away. There's more than trees - dense brush and vines prevail at the edges.

Being that the guy was hit at 75 yards but the bird was probably less than half that distance away, its not cut and dried that this was anything but an accident. The Robbins Swamp area is dotted with smallish clearings and heavy, treed cover - this isn't some wide-open Dakota cornfield. It wouldn't take much for the guy who was hit to exit from behind cover just as the shooter fired at the bird.

Again, absent the details, none here should rush to judgement.

That's a good reminder. Anyone remember a young boy getting shot in the head inside a porta potty while some teenagers were target practicing and decided to take a shot at it? I can't find the original story.
