It's a game to 'them'.....a selfish game. They do not care if anyone is hurt or killed.
I like the .22lr solution myself.

I won't speak for other LEO's on this board but I'll tell you what I tell everyone that I meet and they question me about intervening in a crime in progress (usually a victim who requested police service). I tell them 1st to call the police and after that it is their decision on what to do next. I usually tell the person that they have to live with their decision and if they feel that they should physically intervene, then they make their decision willingly and is responsible for any and all results of their action. If they decide to call 911 and become a witness and stick around and wait for the police to do their job then they should make themselves known to the police and be a GOOD WITNESS and not shirk their responsibility when we need witnesses to place the suspect(s) at the scene of the crime. I DO tell people that it is probably BETTER to be a good witness than to intervene but I also tell them that they are the ones at the scene of the crime (I also mention and discuss property crime or person crime) and they have to make the best decision at that time.
Such a terrible crime!
Again, my prayers to the victim and her family.

No, not at all.
When and where people have stated as much has been situationally dependent as related to items like theft of property from a store or chasing after some fool who broke into your neighbors home and is walking/running down the street with his laptop, XBox or Cuisinart (see Joe Horn of TX).
That is _not_ at all same as this event; A case of active sexual and felony assault.
It is not accurate nor fair to intermingle felony assault with that of insured and easily replaced property theft.
Further it is not fair nor accurate to take the thoughts, views, and positions of persons statements as toward _minor crime_ property theft and apply same as toward what is felony assault.
To do so and imply as much is to be disingenuous at best.
The folks and LEOs who have stated do not get involved were not at all making statements as toward felony assault in general nor rape as in specific.

"Sure, As long as the machines are workin' and you can call 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, and you scare the **** out of them; no more rules...You'll see how primitive they can get."
Amen...the last thing I'd want to happen is to get myself involved and find myself beaten to death by a gang of 10-12 thugs - in which case I wouldn't be of much help to the girl - either in her defense or as a witness. It's easy to discuss how tough we'd be in handing out justice and a beat down on those guys - but 1 on 12 are odds I'd not want to come up against. Talk about disparity of force...forget it...I'm not getting involved, but I will call 911 immediately and be the perfect witness.
There is a special place in hell for all those involved in this incident...

The ones that physically committed this crime, no matter what age, should all be tried as adults and get the death penalty. Scum like that doesn't deserve to live.
The bystanders, while they have no legal obligation to call the police, do have a moral obligation, and they failed as humans.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
People not only stood by and watched, they were FILMING IT ON THEIR CELL PHONES!!!
Girl, 15, gang raped outside school dance in U.S. while witnesses film horror attack | Mail Online
The brutal gang rape of a teenager, while up to a dozen people watched and filmed the assault on mobile phones, has been described as 'something out of a horror movie' by shocked U.S. police.
The 15-year-old victim was found unconscious after the terrifying assault in the grounds of a school in California.
Police said she had been raped by up to six people in an ordeal lasting two-and-a-half hours before being beaten and left for dead.
But what has shocked police in Richmond, California, is that as many as 12 others watched the attack take place and did nothing to help.
Investigators said several filmed the rape on their mobile phones and they are checking YouTube and Facebook to see if footage of the assault had been posted on the internet.
'This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it,' said Lt Mark Gagan from Richmond Police.
'It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can't believe not one person felt compelled to help her.'
The events mirrored the 1988 film The Accused for which Jodie Foster won an Oscar for her portrayal of woman who is raped while others look on and do nothing to help

I agree with Janq; this wasn't a property crime or a holdup where innocent bystanders were at risk. "Not getting involved" in this case was about a bunch of punks full of teen and macho-make-believe testosterone tearing up an easy mark. "Not getting involved" didn't even cross the pea-sized brains of these maggots, most likely they were getting their vicarious jollies from watching and hoping they got a turn. Bottom line: No one there watching thought it was wrong.
So was this like watching some R-rated video game? "Fight Club" but with penises instead of fists? Folks, I am scared of what this says about even a tiny fraction of our young people.
A generation ago, New York City was shamed and morally outraged when Kitty Genovese was brutally stabbed near her apartment in Queens, and her screams for help went unheeded because no one wanted to "get involved." They closed their windows so they wouldn't hear the screams. The gang rape of the 15 year-old girl in Richmond, CA is a polar opposite: people went out of their way to watch, and calling for help would have spoiled the show.
I am sickened at the thought that ANY young man with an ounce of moral fiber thought that watching a protracted sexual assault was worth hanging around for. The thought of a parent sending their young daughter off for a memorable night of fun and having it end like this just defies description.
My perverse mind imagines the mothers of any boys charged with this heinous crime saying "she asked for it" and "but he's such a good boy."
I think I need to puke.
