Charlie Foniloa Sekona is scheduled to be arraigned today in connection with the Oct. 12 killing of 49-year-old Eric Buschman, said a spokesman for District Attorney Kamala Harris.
If convicted of first-degree murder and an additional charge of using a deadly weapon, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.
Buschman was stabbed outside his home on the 300 block of Athens Street as he and a friend unloaded camping gear after returning home from a weekend trip to Mount Shasta. The friend was not harmed.
Sekona lives with his parents about five blocks from Buschman's Excelsior district house, but authorities said there is no indication the men knew each other and no apparent reason for the killing.
Police believe Sekona walked home after the stabbing. He was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop.
Court records show that Sekona's father, the Rev. Fusifuka "Charlie" Sekona, told authorities that his son has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and hears voices.
The younger Sekona had been undergoing court-ordered mental health counseling as a result of a March 30 incident in which he beat a worker who was sweeping the sidewalk outside the Costco store on 10th Street. The man told police that Sekona, whom he did not know, punched him in the face for no reason, then pummeled him on the ground.
Prosecutors charged Sekona with a misdemeanor for that attack and allowed him to enter a pretrial diversion program that consisted of the mental health counseling. He completed a similar program in January after being arrested for theft in May 2008, court records show.

Diagnosed with schizophrenia and hears voices - previous unprovoked assualt and released by the system to attack again. Certainly a clarion call for a self-defense weapon. O wait, it is Kalifornia, a may issue state. Did not work out well for this young man. A tragedy for both families.

I felt bad for the guy who just came back from the camping trip and did not have his camping gear including a knife which could have been used as a weapon to defend himself. I doubt that this subject father would allow his disturb son to walk freely in a shall issue State.
