Off-duty cops shoot two, kill one in Long Island robberies

Two off-duty cops - one an NYPD officer - shot their way out of separate confrontations with strong-armed robbers on Long Island on Tuesday.
The NYPD cop blasted a knife-wielding suspect during an attempted carjacking in Elmont.
The other, a Nassau County detective, killed a suspect armed with a baseball bat during a holdup at a Deer Park car wash, police said.
The NYPD cop, identified only as a 28-year-old assigned to Brooklyn, was in his late-model SUV, waiting to pick up a friend around 1:30 a.m. when two suspects tried to steal his car.
Willie Watkins, 18, pulled a knife and opened the cop's unlocked driver's side door, police said. The officer fired one shot from his 9-mm. pistol, striking Watkins in the shoulder. Watkins was arrested at a local hospital. The accomplice was still on the loose last night.
The Nassau detective was vacuuming his SUV around 3 a.m. at a 24-hour Deer Park car wash when he was attacked by two men, one of whom bashed the detective repeatedly with a baseball bat.
The detective, who had identified himself as a cop, fired four shots, killing Erik Johnson, 24, of Bay Shore, L.I. The accomplice, Amille Moore, 16, of Bay Shore, was collared a few blocks away, police said.
The detective had contusions and internal bleeding and was treated at a local hospital, cops said.

Mortal mistakes:
"...waiting to pick up a friend around 1:30 a.m. when two suspects tried to steal his car. Willie Watkins, 18, pulled a knife and opened the cop's unlocked driver's side door..."
"...was vacuuming his SUV around 3 a.m. at a 24-hour Deer Park car wash..."
Stupid.
The second victim might as well have walked down a street with two bulging bags labeled 'MONEY $$$' and done so while wearing a blindfold.
Being LEOs they very much should have known better.
Do not do this.
Who is out and about at 1:30-3:00 am?
Predators, prey and police & EMTs writing victim reports.

Yet another "don't bring a Knife to a Gun fight" lesson that went unheeded.

This could become a new police street cleaning tactic (not official policy). Off duty armed officer looks dumb, becomes bate, and shoots to kill. Bate them in and blow them away. Street is cleaned up and officer is justified in self defense actions. Gangs could be thinned down and muggers and robbers could be cleaned out of neighborhoods, and the courts time and tax payers money is saved for the price of ammo.
Of course you could just allow shall issue CCW and a good clear set of Castle Doctrine laws, and the muggers and robbers would not know who to pick on and gang members would be at a loss as CCW folks would not retreat but stand their ground and fight with deadly force. A few law changes in some of these very gun restrictive states could save lives and tax payers. IMO YMMV

I love how John said the NYPD cop "blasted" a knife-wielding suspect, I wonder how differently he writes when it is a private citizen doing the "blasting"?
