Weapons, police equipment stolen from SWAT supervisor's vehicle in Old East Dallas

10:52 PM CDT on Thursday, October 29, 2009

Dallas police are investigating the burglary of a SWAT supervisor's vehicle from which thousands of dollars in weapons, ammunition, police uniforms and other equipment was taken, according to a police report.

The burglary of Sgt. Vincent Lee's unmarked sport utility vehicle was reported early Thursday in the 2700 block of North Fitzhugh Avenue near North Central Expressway, the report said.

Among the items stolen were a rifle, Dallas police badge, police radios and body armor. The burglar also took a device that sets off a harmless explosion and is sometimes used by officers to distract and apprehend suspects.

Police said a department-wide alert was issued regarding the burglary. No arrests were reported in the case Thursday night, police said.

Did someone leave it unlocked? Keys in the ignition? Door open? How does this happen? Brain...hurts....

I've said it before, vehicles are not a safe place to lock you gun.

Swat officers are armed with Full Autos,so the reference to the rifle could be that the BG's now have a FA colt M4,but the cops don't wanta panic the sheep

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police have arrested the man they believe stole a Dallas SWAT officer's gear from his vehicle. The man was arrested Friday at Six Flags in Arlington.
Officials say two Pantego police officers were working off duty at Six Flags when spotted a man acting suspiciously. The officers searched the man's vehicle and found a SWAT badge. Arlington police were called to the location where they arrested the man.
The man has been identified him as 24-year-old Estaban Casillas. Officials say Casillas has been released from custody pending theft charges.
The unmarked SWAT vehicle was burglarized early Thursday morning in Dallas. Thousands of dollars worth of equipment was stolen, including high powered rifles, special body armor, uniforms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

They don't tend to hold folks indefinately on burglary charges, whether or not it was from a policemans vehicle. When my wifes vehicle was burglarized in our driveway, I am sure the perp didn't spend any time in jail. They just gave him a slap on the wrist and sent him on his way with some probation.

If the cop is going to use his vehicle for storage of his gear he shoud at least get a garage to lock it up in at night. Preferably one attached to his home with some decent locks.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

I do not know the laws out there, but the story also makes it sound like an illegal search.

maybe they got consent, or maybe there were other factors giving them probable cause for the search, we may never know

If loose gun laws are good for criminals why do criminals support gun control?

The guy could say he found the badge and unless they can put him at the burglary,he gets charged with possession of stolen property,I'm sure they are trying to cut a deal just to get the equipment back

I'm glad that they stumbled upon this dirtbag, but I'm disappointed that they cut him loose so quickly...hope he shows up for formal charges. Now he'll be a guy with a warrant.
Wouldn't stealing guns be considered 'armed burglary'?
