FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — Fort Smith police say they're investigating the shooting of an officer early Sunday during a traffic stop.
A news release from the Fort Smith Police Department said Cpl. Barney Parsons was shot at 1:18 a.m. after stopping an SUV on the city's south side.
"During the traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle suddenly exited and began shooting," the release said. Parsons was struck in the chest, leg and foot, according to the release.
The shooter sped away in the vehicle he was driving, a white Chevrolet Avalanche or similar vehicle, the release said.
Parsons, a 24-year veteran of the force, is being treated for his injuries at Sparks Regional Medical Center, according to Sgt. Levi Risley, a department spokesman.
