Fort Smith, Ark., police investigate shooting of officer during traffic stop

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — Fort Smith police say they're investigating the shooting of an officer early Sunday during a traffic stop.

A news release from the Fort Smith Police Department said Cpl. Barney Parsons was shot at 1:18 a.m. after stopping an SUV on the city's south side.

"During the traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle suddenly exited and began shooting," the release said. Parsons was struck in the chest, leg and foot, according to the release.

The shooter sped away in the vehicle he was driving, a white Chevrolet Avalanche or similar vehicle, the release said.

Parsons, a 24-year veteran of the force, is being treated for his injuries at Sparks Regional Medical Center, according to Sgt. Levi Risley, a department spokesman.
And to think of the meager yearly salaries available to trained police officers in these parts. I get upset sometimes.....I really do.

    Ram Rod,

I don't know about any one else, but I think the things our LEO's have to deal with are worth so much more than what they are paid, it's ridiculous!

As for the incident, hopefully they will catch up to this BG and send him to meet "Bubba" real soon. Will say a prayer for Cpl. Parsons.

    Hope they find the BG.

    Great.
I'll get to read another incident report.

I hope the BG gets what is coming to him...soon.

If a man will shoot a cop, he'll shoot anyone.

It's unfortunate he survived the encounter.

There were a few police officers shot this past weekend apparently across the country.
Well, just got done watching the local news, and pertaining to my original post and follow up, it appears (from what they said on the local news), the shooter in this case was a permit holder. The officer is doing fine after being shot four times and expected to be released tomorrow from the hospital. I believe they will seek charges of attempted capital murder in this case as they also believe there were passengers in the vehicle other than the shooter and they are seeking accessory to capital murder charges for those.
