A community activist and the family of a man shot to death by a pregnant woman who said he was breaking into cars at her northwest Houston apartment complex are questioning whether she fired the gun, suggesting she is perhaps covering for someone else.

Andre “Squeeky” Mayes, 19, was killed when he was shot one time in the face and neck outside the complex at 5959 Pinemont near Alabonson Road late Monday, police said. The woman who shot him, who is 8 months pregnant and 4 feet 11 inches tall, told homicide investigators she saw Mayes break into someone else's car, then try to burglarize her boyfriend's car before she opened fire. She has not been charged with any wrongdoing, but the investigation is continuing and the shooting will be reviewed by a grand jury.

Mayes' family and activist Quanell X are questioning how a woman who is 8 months pregnant and so short in stature could fire a 20-gauge shotgun and why the woman's boyfriend never came outside their apartment after the shooting. Quanell X said the woman denied shooting Mayes when a neighbor questioned her immediately after Mayes was killed.

“We are praying that the truth comes out,” Quanell X told mourners during a candlelight vigil outside the woman's apartment Wednesday. “This does not pass the smell test.”

The woman, whose name Houston police would not release, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. No one answered the door at her apartment.

Others who know her, however, said she would not hesitate to protect her property.

Mayes has three convictions for burglary of a vehicle, court records show.

Houston Police Department homicide investigators say they have no evidence so far to cast doubt on the woman's story, but they will conduct further interviews. The shot was fired from inside her apartment, and no witnesses reported seeing her boyfriend holding the gun, said HPD Sgt. Colin Howard.

The woman told police her boyfriend was in the shower at the time of the shooting, and the bottom of the shower was wet when police examined it, Howard said.

Mayes had a screwdriver in his hand when he was killed, Howard said. Damage was found to both of the cars burglarized, and someone had rummaged through the first car, he said. Quanell X said that Mayes' fingerprints were not found on either vehicle, but police said prints could not be retrieved because of dew on the cars.

Twenty gauge for the win. I don't understand why it matters whose finger was on the trigger. There must be more to the story.

Quanell X is a real hero for the criminal element. Anytime a criminal gets popped doing criminal stuff, he runs to their aid and screams that the "attack" on the criminal was racially motivated. Yeah, OK... He also happens to be the leader of the New Black Panther Party in Houston and has a record of preaching that violet acts should be committed against whites and Jewish people. So basically he is a racist with double standards...

I thought this was the same guy. I've heard him interviewed on the radio and he's flat out nuts.

The only thing that doesn't pass the "smell test" is defending a car thief. This isn't an "alleged" thief, this guy already had three convictions.

Why are there candlelight vigils for low-life trash???

What does 4' 11" or being pregnant have to do with anything?

Maybe Quanell X needs to leave Houston and move to Chicago where community activists are appreciated.

    Bingo.

He could become an aide to US Rep. Bobby Rush, formerly of the Black Panthers.

Community organizers like Quanell X only show up when the perp is black and the shooter is not.

Quanell X apparently does not realize that there are plenty of women capable of handling a 20 gauge... or 12 gauge for that matter... pregnant or not... 4' 11" or not... that's not the point... it's very doable.

It sounds to me like there was a bit of community policing there in regards to the BG. Does it matter who pulled the trigger? Tx allows deadly force in the protection of property. I wish the same were allowed for all other states too.

Heh. I'm willing to bet it was a youth stock too. Good for her.

    The only questions are:

    What model shotgun?
    What load?
    Does she need more ammo?
Would she like to upgrade to 12 ga with flite control, reduced recoil buck?
