I'll assume that he either did not have a holster, or it was not a quality, boned holser.
I've fallen down a set of rodeo bleachers (another story) and my gun did not leave the holster.
Can you say "maroooooon"?

Quality, modern firearms do not "go off" when dropped. Plaxico tried to grab his slipping Glock in is sweat pants and pulled the trigger. I would guess something similar happened here...
