Hunter charged after shooting another hunter in Sullivan County

LUMBERLAND — A 50-year-old hunter was shot about 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sullivan County when another hunter mistook him for a deer, authorities said.
Robert Robar, 52, of Valley Stream, was charged by state police with felony reckless endangerment for shooting Terry Pelton of Sparrow Bush.
Police said Robar was about 350 feet away from when he fired a single round from his Savage .30-06 rifle, striking Pelton, who was dressed in camouflage and was hunting alone in a wooded area off Rio Dam Road.
Police said Robar helped Pelton out of the woods and transported him to Bonsecors Hospital in Port Jervis. Pelton was taken by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery to his pelvic region.
Robar was arraigned by Lumberland Town Justice William McKerrell and sent to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to Town Court 7 p.m. Monday.

This is the exact reason that I quit hunting in MI many years ago...stupid hunters, then add in some alcohol...it's safer in Iraq.

The only trouble is, there's nothing over there of trophy quality.

Except maybe if you bag the game warden.

By the way, the satarist Tom Lehrer wrote a cute song about hunting. Here are the lyrics:
I always will remember,
’twas a year ago november,
I went out to hunt some deer
On a mornin’ bright and clear.
I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.
I was in no mood to trifle,
I took down my trusty rifle
And went out to stalk my prey.
What a haul I made that day.
I tied them to my fender, and I drove them home somehow,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.
The law was very firm, it
Took away my permit,
The worst punishment I ever endured.
It turned out there was a reason,
Cows were out of season,
And one of the hunters wasn’t insured.
People ask me how I do it,
And I say, there’s nothin’ to it,
You just stand there lookin’ cute,
And when something moves, you shoot!
And there’s ten stuffed heads in my trophy room right now,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a pure-bred guernsey cow.

30-06...dressed in camo (no blaze orange?)...surgery to pelvic region...
Ouch but the guy takes at least 5% of the blame for not wearing orange. It's a law here in VA.

Some of the ignorance of some hunters really amazes me. I go to our farm (large area) and will drive the whole thing honking my horn, and tossing firecrackers. Some times, hunters illegally hunting on the land will jump out and complain that we're ruining the hunting there for them. At which point they are told that's exactly what we intend to do, and then ask them why they are illegally hunting on the land as we are calling the Sheriff to come and get them.

Orange is not the cure all, and may be part of the problem. No orange, then I'll shoot! It may have made hunters lazy and dangerous. I had a close call when I was younger. The guy had on an orange vest. I saw nothing until he stepped out of the Rhododendron thicket. Why do people shoot before they know exactly what they are shooting at? You can't even make a good shot like that.

It has been a long time since I went deer hunting but I can never recall a deer dressed in either camo or blaze orange.

Accidents like this IMO are all too common. Someone I knew many years ago was killed in this fashion.

This is the reason I never go to game lands during rifle season.

There is no substitute for common sense. Common sense says you identify what you are shooting at before you shoot at it.

The shooter should be charged with murder if the person dies and attempted murder if the person lives. The shooter hit what he was shooting at so that is not a shooting accident. A shooting accident would be if a bullet hit something other than what was being shot. Larry

+1.
Not every jurisdiction requires Orange.
