GOOD: Shotgun Wielding Clerk Stops Armed Robber - Rocky Mount, NC

Store Robbery Foiled By Shotgun Toting Clerk

A would-be armed robber apparently had second thoughts when an employee pulled out his shotgun Monday night.

It happened at the Salem & Sons Convenience Store on Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount around 10:20 p.m.

Police say employees were inside cleaning up, and saw a customer at the front door. They let the man inside, but at the same time another man came in as well and showed a black handgun in the direction of an employee. That employee immediately got his shotgun, racked the slide, and pointed it at the would-be robber.

The robber then turned around and slowly left the store. Nothing was taken in the robbery attempt.

Rocky Mount police say there were two other successful robberies Monday night.

The first, around 6:20 p.m. at the Family Dollar on Harbour West Drive. There a man showed a black handgun and demanded money out of the cash register. Then at 10:00 p.m. at the Kangaroo Mart on North Wesleyan Boulevard a customer first asked for change. When the clerk refused, the man told her it was a robbery. Police say no weapon was shown in that robbery.

    The fear of God...

I'm telling you man, nothing puts the fear of God into man's heart like the sound of a shotgun slide being racked.

Glad the criminal didn't come out shooting the moment he saw "false moves" being made by the staff. Could easily have been messy.

Still, shotgun trumps handgun in terms of intimidation factor. He done good, to survive the encounter. Let's just hope the BG's don't learn that storming the place might yield better results. That doesn't seem a great leap to make. Caution.

Glad the clerk was prepared, sad that the clerk didn't end the BG's crime spree...

If you ever do, don't press the button on the "garage door looking thingy"!!! Lots of phone calls and flashing lights ensue. Not that I would know from personal experience. "No Ma'am, I was cleaning up over on the counter, Well I might have bumped it accidentally." Yeah it's a crap job.

Then he wouldn't have racked the slide! No O-S factor!

I just found this out. It's called "cruiser ready". Most shotguns do not have a safety to prevent an AD or ND in case they are dropped. Keeping the chamber empty does not allow for a dropped weapon to fire. Newer pistols have firing pin blocks, shotguns don't. And the sound of racking a shotgun is quite a deterrent in itself.
