PALMVIEW – An 11-year-old boy shot a man trying to break into his home early Friday during a home invasion north of the city.

Three men burst into the house on the 9400 block of Minnesota Road just before 12:30 a.m., Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies said.

Inside, the child and his mother hold themselves into the bedroom when the gunmen tried to force their way in. One of the men shot through the door striking the boy in the groin area.

The child, who was carrying a .22 caliber rifle, shot back, hitting one of the suspects in the neck. The men fled the scene shortly thereafter, investigators said.

Both the boy and the injured attacker remained hospitalized Friday afternoon. Authorities said the child was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

The suspected burglar was transferred to a San Antonio hospital under police guard.

Deputies have detained two other men believed to be involved in the attack.

    Unbelievable!

The boy with is mother who is supposed to be his protector arms himself, takes a round to a critical area and stays in the fight to in turn functionally defend himself to the point of turning the attack. All the while saving his mother from no doubt physical assault if not death.

If I were his towns mayor or police chief I would be sure to give him an award for uncommon bravery.

That is just amazing, to me.

Wow. I have a hunch this is a situation where dad taught the boy to shoot the rifle, and where mom had no interest in learning to shoot or touching a gun.

While we don't know this with certainty, that seems like a reasonable explanation.

Would really like to know the tactical arrangement in that room when this happened. It could be, that the boy positioned himself opposite the door with mom holding a handgun from the side in case the BGs breached the door.

Anyway, at least it wasn't in NYC or Chicago where boy and mom would be in deep dip for defending their bedroom.

Great story, except that the kid had to get shot. I'm glad he made the decision to not become a victim. I hope my children would be able to do the same.

Thats some little man. To have the nerves to take a bullet and still protect his mother at the age of 11. He should have a parade and a big celebration thrown for him as a hero, because he is.

Great ending to a frighting story! It would only be better if the little guy would've hit the bone-bag center of the forehead. Hope he recovers and suffers no permanent damage from the ordeal.
