Very Strange: Dairy farmer kills 51 cows, takes own life
Dairy farmer kills 51 cows, takes own life - The Daily Freeman Blotter: Serving the Hudson Valley since 1871(DailyFreeman.com)
COPAKE (NY) — A dairy farmer in this Columbia County town shot and killed 51 cows in a barn on his property and then committed suicide, state police said on Friday.
Troopers responding to a 911 call about 1 p.m. Thursday found the dead cows and the body of Dean E. Pearson, 59, inside a barn on the farmer’s property at 121 Weed Mine Road, police said.
They said Pearson appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Troopers were called to the farm after a visitor found a note on the barn door that said not to come in and to notify police.
Police said their investigation revealed Pearson had been despondent about recent personal issues.
Local farmers buried the cows outside the barn on Friday.
An autopsy on Pearson was to be performed Friday at Albany Medical Center.

Very sad.
And how about the part about local farmers burying the cows a day later outside the barn? FIFTY TWO OF THEM. I'd like the 411 on that process.

Are they sure one of the cows didn't get off a shot before it died?

Wondering why he just wouldn't give his dairy cows away to the neighboring farmers?
Of course and these days there are some really "screw loose" suicidal people who desire to take other innocent people and even family members with them (which I never quite could understand)....but, 51 cows?

I know it's sad, but can't help it. I'm just waiting for an invitation to the BBQ.

sounds like he was following the same pattern as the typical "family annihilator" profile. pretty sad all around, for him, and the cows. i don't find the humor in suicide.

I'm betting cows had liens from a bank on them and bank was in process of forclosing on his farm so he decided he wasn't gonna let em get everything and since farming was his life he might as well be dead.
At least he didn't decide to go shoot up a buncha people he might of blamed for his situation

Dairy farmers have it really tough, the milk prices are so low they are losing money and working their buts off in the process.
I would not be surprised if he was just disgusted and couldn't get his head straight.
