SANDY, Utah (AP) -- A Murray police officer is in good condition after accidentally shooting himself in the hip.

Murray police Detective Kenny Bass says the officer accidentally shot himself while getting ready for work at his Sandy home Thursday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital in good condition.

Bass says the officer is a 14-year veteran of the department. He says the officer was putting the gun in its holster when the incident happened.

Bass says Murray police policy generally calls for weapons to be loaded when an officer is on duty or preparing for work.

I wish people would be more careful. We don't need to give the antis any more reason to dislike guns and gun owners.

When hearing stories like this, I'm reminded of the top three things to keep in mind when carrying---Safety safety safety.

I'm not sure what mistake he made, but he surely did something wrong!!

Generally loaded when on duty? So when would the policy call for weapons to not be loaded when on duty?

    I hope he's OK.

I've noticed in CCW classes some use their muzzle to find the mouth of the holster while their hand/grip is a few inches away from their body which results in the muzzle being pointed at their hip.

Bet you a Starbucks it was a Glock... the "safe action" trigger is a great feature as long as you keep your finger off it! Clearly a personal training failure here.

Phoenix PD had a couple of leg shots during training over the last year or so... root cause was finger on the trigger during reholstering.

Funny, never heard of a cocked-and-locked 1911 going off as it was re-holstered!

No matter how long you have been shooting, it is always possible to let your guard down. When you do the results can be painful!

Hope he mends well and he, and others, learn from the mistake.

The officer injured himself mishandling his firearm. It was not an uncommon and purely random event(accident).

    Its happened before.

A thumb snap getting in the trigger of the gun while it is pushed down into the holster. Thumb snap hooks the trigger and fires gun.

Not as hard to make happen as most think, especially with a retention holster.
