Dog shoots man in back during hunting trip

Somewhere, I seem to remember some rules...

Dog shoots man in back during hunting trip - Local - MercedSun-Star.com

53-year-old man is recovering after a bizarre hunting accident Saturday that Merced County sheriff's deputies believe involved his dog.

Deputies learned of the incident after responding to Los Banos Memorial Hospital about a shooting victim who was being treated, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.

The victim apparently had been hunting with a friend in the 15000 block of Highway 152 near Los Banos. After the men had completed their outing, the victim placed his shotgun on the ground and retrieved his decoy ducks from the water about 15 yards away. While retrieving the decoys, the victim's black Labrador retriever stepped on his loaded shotgun, MacKenzie said.

The gun fired, MacKenzie said, spraying pellets in the victim's direction. Some of the pellets struck the victim in the upper-left side of his back.

The victim wasn't seriously injured, and was released from the hospital the same day, MacKenzie said.

Thats why they call em hunting dogs,Seriously tho I have heard at least 4 or 5 incidents now where a dog has discharged a shotgun the owner laid down loaded, usually in the bed of a pickup the dog is running around in

Wonder if the dog is going to be charges with assault with a deadly weapon?

More importantly, did the dog have his license for hunting humans and did he have his limit?

Bet that dog rode home in the cold.

Can't blame the dog. He didn't do it on purpose. It's like blaming a 3 year old for finding daddy's gun and shooting himself.

The hunter shouldn't have left his LIVE weapon just laying on the ground let alone walked in front of it.

Also it seems a little convenient to blame the dog. It seems some of these "DOG" NDs occur when there is another person hunting as well. Could be a cover-up.

I think it might be a cover up as well, just so happens the gun discharged, they will probably run test's to verify. like loading it and stepping on it a few times. lol

I was thinking the pooch was fed up with his master's lack-of-ability with that scattergun and was showing him how it SHOULD be done.

Seriously, when done with the hunt, unload. The last place I'd consider putting my gun....AFTER I UNLOAD IT, would be the ground.

It is quite possible the dog shot him on purpose. I know if I was forced to get into the cold water to retrieve a duck I hadn't shot, I'd be pissed off too!

That's why dogs should be taught the four rules in puppyhood!

This is really close to home; I hope the dog isn't on the loose with the shotgun!
