    "Boy shoots himself accidentally"

HUBER HEIGHTS — A 17-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg late Sunday, Feb. 21, while cleaning a handgun, police said.

The teen was taken to Miami Valley Hospital but his condition was not known Monday morning.

Officers arriving at the 8661 Pinegate Drive home after receiving a call at 11:16 p.m. reported the teen had two wounds to his right leg.

The boy said he was cleaning the 45-caliber handgun when it discharged. Police said in a news release that it appears the round “entered his upper right leg, traveled approximately one foot below the skin, and then exited just above his right knee.”

Huber Heights Fire Department paramedics treated his injuries and he was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"Tee, hee, hee...this'll ever happen to me! I've been shootin' guns for work and for fun for forty years and have put a million rounds downrange and was a cop and a soldier and a SEAL an did Spec Ops and was a security guard and am an expert who could never mess up or get myself or anybody else hurt. I also drove a cab and just got my CCW too."

Sounds more like quick draw practice to me. Even if it wasn't, stupid was involved. Too bad is wasn't a reproduction ending wound. Got to clean up the gene pool.

This is no more surprising than a teen who gets in a car wreck. Nothing like inexperience to make the worst case scenario a reality.

That's why I never clean my guns, they always seem to cop an attitude when some people clean them

My Cousin, many years ago, shot himself in the leg with a 357 while practicing his quick draw at a local shooting range.
He was a Western quck draw wannabe. He smartened up real quick!

We still tease him about it.

That is going to leave a mark...
One of the most dangerous political philosophies afflicting America today is the belief that we canít allow anyone to suffer the natural consequences of their own stupidity.

How many ADs happen cleaning guns?
I asked my neighbor who has 2 sons that are police officers if they were ever shot at.
Yeah he says .. one of his sons was grazed in the head when a fellow officer was cleaning his gun at the station, of all places.

I just don't understand these kinds of stories. Who doesn't break their weapon down prior to cleaning?

Back in the sixties I had two uncles die while cleaning their guns. Both had recently been diagnosed with cancer.

I came across the following story re. an accidental discharge of a .45 230 gr. jhp into a fellows leg. He documents his accident and subsequent recovery.

Really makes you think about the 4 safety rules!

I clean my guns at the range right after I shoot with a bore snake, and a cloth that I rub with really hard on the places I would ordinarily use a brush and cleaner on. Gets 90% of it off; before a gun cools it's a lot easier to get the crud off.

When it's time to do a more thorough cleaning, the gun is field-stripped at the range and brought home like that. Same with revolvers, though they're a lot easier to check that they are empty.

The less you handle a gun outside of a range, the less chance of ADs in my view.

I mean c'mon. Really? How does this happen in this day and age when gun safety is so strongly stressed. Its not that hard to check the chamber for live round.
