A young Deerfield Beach boy accidentally shot his older brother in the face, killing him, with their father's handgun.

    BY MIKE CLARY
    SUN SENTINEL
Minutes after Randy Reddick Jr. sent his two young sons to his truck to get the coat and hat he had left on the front seat, one of the brothers ran back into their apartment screaming.

``I shot my brother! I shot my brother!'' the 10-year-old cried Saturday afternoon. ``I didn't mean to do it.''

Reddick, 31, said he raced down the stairs from his third-floor Deerfield Beach apartment to find his oldest son and namesake on the ground next to the black Dodge pickup.

Randy Reddick III, 11, had the coat in his hand. Beside him was the wide-brim hat, full of blood, as if he had been wearing it, his father said.

In the truck was a 40-caliber Glock pistol that Reddick had left in the vehicle's console. The boy had been shot in the face.

``I knelt down to see if there was life. There wasn't,'' Reddick said Sunday, standing outside his apartment in the 700 block of Northeast 41st Street. He stared teary-eyed at his truck and his child's bloodstain in the parking space beside it.

``So I kissed him, covered him up with the coat, and began to pray.''

Keyla Concepcion, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office, said the shooting appeared to have been accidental. The case will be referred to prosecutors for review, she said.

Reddick has a concealed weapon permit for the gun, police said.

Usually, Reddick said, he carries the weapon in a holster under his shirt. But he had taken off the holster and gun and put them into the console when he stopped at the Oakland Park post office to pick up his mail. Firearms are prohibited on federal property.

For the boys, both students at Tedder Elementary School in Pompano Beach, the day began as usual, Reddick said. Randy, a fifth-grader, and his brother, in the third grade, did their morning chores, then played with video games and their remote-control cars.

``They were close. They were brothers,'' Reddick said.

The Sun Sentinel is not naming the younger brother because of his age.

Reddick went off to march with his Freemasons fraternity in the annual Sistrunk Historical Festival in Fort Lauderdale. The hat and coat he had left in the truck were part of his parade costume.

Reddick said he heard news reports late Saturday that suggested he was careless with the weapon.

``I'm far from careless,'' he said. ``It was an accident.''

Reddick identified the boys' mother as Latavia Green of Fort Lauderdale. She could not be reached Sunday.

Bottom line is HE didn't have control over HIS loaded weapon.
YOU are the weapon, your firearm is just a tool!

Dear Lord - that is heartbreaking.

It's a tough read and a good reminder for me to stay vigilant with my 9-yr-old. I can't even bear to think about going thru something like that.

The father is definitely responsible, but it wouldn't have happened if:

    1. He didn't forget his gun. Nobody is perfect

    and...

    2. There wasn't this stupid law.

I don't see where he is transferring blame. Still. it is what it is.

I go to the post office just like im sure the rest of you do. I disarm and I retrieve my firearm(you and no one else is responsible for the whereabouts of your firearm) This is a tragedy and the fathers negligence sounds to be to blame not the USPS. Not that i agree with the law but it is not the laws fault this happened.

Nope , the gun owner is to blame. USPS didn't make him leave his gun in his truck once home.

USPS bears absolutely no blame here - the father negligently left his firearm unsecured where a child could access it. It's not an accident, it is criminally culpable negligence.

Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

...and I don't see where the father implicates fault to the USPS.

Very sad story indeed especially the boy having to carry this heartbreak the rest of his life.

I see no USPS culpability here just a tragedy that was easily avoidable
I carry into my local post office. It's a contract post office with no USPS employees and not federally owned property.
