Here's a link to the real thing.
Also The part where Steve was on the bike and took the gas cap off and shook it to check the gas level wasn't in the script, they left it in. (Steve was an avid dirt rider and they didn't have gas gages)

Heh. I watched it right now too.

Of the 76 that were able to get out, only 3 were never caught.

The book was on the required reading list when I was in grade school. You think a story like that is required in today's public schools? I think not!

I always loved that movie and have it on DVD. Great cast, great story, lots of daring and suspense. And it was a story I knew because of reading the book first!

In real life it was two Norwegian pilots and a Dutch pilot. The Norwegians made it to Sweden by boat and the Dutch pilot made his way through France and ended up at a British consulate in Spain.

The movie obviously took a few liberties.

All I know is every time I watch that movie I'm whistling nonstop for about a week. I hadn't realized there was a book on the matter (though I was aware of the true story aspect), I'll have to look for it on my next trip to the library.

Yes, one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes.
Guess I'll just have to make my own cookie.

There was a book titled "The Wooden Horse" which was an account of an actual escape done using a wooden vaulting horse that was placed on the field and a tunnel dug underneath it each day. Amazing the way people were able to think outside the box.

True story, took place in the same POW camp as "The Great Escape."
