Wife's Journey to CCW Acceptance
I had mentioned years ago that I wanted a CCW, but my wife would ask why and I couldn't give her an acceptable (to her) answer. She thought protection = paranoia. As we aged and became "less firm" (infirm) concurrent with the perception of increased crime, she began the road to change. I didn't mention it and it was only a comment from her now and then about the uncertainty of safety.
With the recession we saw an increase in petty crime and we began to talk about getting the gun out of the safe. Then we took a wrong turn off a freeway in LA and within a block it looked like Beirut with wire topping 10' chain link fences, broken glass in the street and streets deserted. We were at everybody's mercy and knew I had to carry from that day forward. But it was only for trips or business in the bad part of town.
I got my permit and joined the forum looking like a deer in headlights with no clue what the real world was up to. I started my education and asked a lot of innocent questions testing the flip side of arguments. My boss and mentor of many years had taught me that is the fastest way to learn. So I learned and started carrying everywhere. Then she began to question why everywhere.
I gave her printouts of posts where you all were getting gas or the pickup washed and a dozen other innocent scenarios where a BG got in your face. She understood and agreed about always carry.
There has been an increase of home invasions in towns near us and really ugly outcomes. So this morning we are just talking about stuff when she brings that up and asks me to carry in the house.
So, over time she had migrated from "don't be paranoid" to please start carrying at home.
When I saw the 5.11 Covert Pants on sale she was ok with me getting a pair. After she saw them and the price she said get more. Then it was get a couple in brown. Then get a couple in denim, then one more. We couldn't get them in my size so she altered every pair and they turned out terrific. So I have 10 new pairs of pants so I can carry without printing - and she is a real critic!
No she won't be shooting. She has a degenerating neurological disease that's a cousin to MS and can barely walk or lift over a pound or two. She has her hands full fighting this thing, and leaves the protection to me. I guess you can say after 44 years she trusts me.
