Wow. Cant get Home Buyer's Rebate due to marriage.

My husband and I, newly married, are building a house together.
1) I completely qualify for the new home owners tax credit, which would get me $8,000
2) My husband completely qualifies for the previous home owners tax credit, which would get him $6,500.
3) Because we got married, we get NUTHIN. :mad:

In order to get the rebate your spouse must qualify as well, which is fine and dandy, but I qualify for one and he qualifies for the other, so we end up with nada. :twak:
Not that I really expect to get anything back from the gov't, but I just gotta say this irked me just a smidge. :buttkick:

note: if we were not yet married we would get $7250 (half of each)

That's the black hole of rules and regulations; someone always falls right into the center of nothingness.

I'd double and triple check the source of the info that you don't qualify, and then send a note --with a request for possible assistance-- to your critter. It is possible you are getting bad or incorrect information. Also, can you buy the house in your name alone so that you qualify for the credit?

im possessive. even called the irs to double check.
having it in just one of our name's doesn't help. if anyone tried to get the rebate the auto check the spouse to see if they apply

The Gov has been in the business of rewarding people for not being married for years. There are a few tax perks. But they sure messed up society with a few of their entitlement programs being anti marriage.

Anull the marriage, get the rebate, then elope? :embarassed:

Yeah, about par for the course over all, though. How can you possible be a good government dependent if you depend on each other? :irked:
