You see the whole AZ plan is mindless.

Folks come here and want it both ways. They want to claim they are conservatives and that US citizens have rights; but then they make fun of other citizens and take steps to limit their rights.

They think other citizens should have to carry papers but they should be exempt because their skin is the right hew. How many illegal Irish do you think your AZ police will be stopping? Or illegal English? Or illegal Russians? Likely, they'll be stopping some native Americans. Guaranteed. It is also guaranteed they will arrest at least some native born Hispanics. How many millions of your state coffers (tax dollars) do you think these victims will have when they win the lottery in court?

The AZ law is so broad (if I am understanding it) that anyone who isn't very clearly a caucasian native born American might be asked for papers. Papers being more than a DL, proof of status, which most DLs are not.

Thankfully so far the only time I have needed my passport or my wife hers is when we travel into the US from abroad. I have no intention of putting myself in that position--carrying around a passport --to go stay in your wonderful AZ Biltmore.

So guys, you lose. You lose revenue I won't be spending in your airport. You lose rental car revenue I won't be spending. You lose hotel revenue and occupancy taxes. You lose restaurant business and you lose sports event attendance.

    Make fun.

The AZ economy is going down the toilet from this one. It is only a matter of time. Because there are very very many people who are likely to feel the same way on this issue. And some are affluent who just might decide that AZ isn't where they want to retire.
    Well said!

I hope this works for Arizona. It is one of my favorite places in the world, and my wife and I planned on retiring there until all the problems with the illegals squatting, kidnapping, etc. soured her on the idea.

This bill is no different than the cops asking if you have a permit for the handgun on your hip during a traffic stop. Actually it is less onerous than that. And yet the illegal immigrant activists are protesting. All of the legal immigrants we know favor the bill (or even more stringent actions).

All the people that hate AZ SB1070, only want amnesty. Oh excuse me, I forgot it's called comprehensive immigration reform now.

    Not gonna happen!!!!

How do you tell? By looking at the proper legal documentation. It may not be ideal or perfect, but, its a start. It is time for the USA to get rid of the parasitic aliens who are placing a huge burden on our system. They don't pay taxes other than local tax on what they purchase.

In the future I would hope to see some kind of system in place that is better than what we have now.

I just watched the evening news and apparently illegals are fleeing Arizona by the hundreds of thousands. One family of illegals they interviewed came here 15 years ago. In that 15 years they have spawned 10 children. Ten! And that was ONE family. Those ten children are considered citizens of the USA as they were born on US soil. Fine. Let them be citizens but, in that same 15 years, that couple could have become citizens through the proper channels.

Now the fleeing illegals are headed for surrounding states. It wont be long now until those other states feel the huge burden Arizona already had.
I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.

And, to add to that, I think we should start getting our military men, women and boys home from the sand box and let them keep a good tight patrol along the entire border of all the southern and southwestern states. We have enough military power to do a fantastic job of border patrol and protection.

That brings our people home from a hostile place that hates us, it saves billions on defense spending and beefs up our border security by umpteen thousands of people.

We need to stop the flow across the border, allow those already here to assimilate properly through the legal system in place and start contributing as citizens should towards our economy all while giving the boot, or death, to those who rape, rob and murder our neighbors.

Which is what? What legal documentation shows status other than a passport? Are you prepared to walk around with a passport or is that only for folks who look different?

It has already been shown in this and the parallel thread which is also running that 7 states issue DLs with no check of status.

It has also been stated by me that DLs and Social Security cards are both issued to many people who come here legally on very temporary status--students, clergy, HIB visas good for 2 years only, and never leave. They retain their DLs. Therefore the DL is mostly useless for the purpose the AZ legislature thinks it is going to use it for.

At best the AZ legislature has been clueless about these facts and how they will impact the ability of the law to be implemented in an even handed way. At worst, they are consciously aware of, and intend, the profiling they now claim isn't going to happen.

I'd like to see just one person stand up here in this forum and state that they would be willing to have to carry a passport all the time or face arrest. Because, if that isn't good for you, it isn't good for the many US Citizens who just happen to look different. And it shouldn't be.

Regarding the comment about neighboring states ... Guess what? ... You might find (if we could count illegals in each state) that there are more illegal immigrants in quite a few states than in Arizona ... Just about any state that has a crop ... Because the workers do it for less and therefore increase the profit margin for the farmers ... You remember them, the guys being paid NOT to grow certain crops? ...

Up here in Washington there are quite a few illegal immigrants working the fruit and veggie farms as well as the fish canneries ... I think this situation is because Arizona is only the transit station because the jobs are in other states ...

As to "proof of status" ... I keep my last 3 DL as well as social security card, 2 credit cards and CWP in my wallet ...
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.

And since when does a credit card show anything about your status in the US? Someone earlier wrote that they always carry ID because it is needed to use their credit card. Not true. The credit card company Merchant Agreements forbid this practice. You are not supposed to be asked for ID to use your card. Report violations to your card company. I do. And without fail the next time I visit the store they have stopped asking.

Your DL, possibly does mean something about status but it is no sure thing. Anyway, since when do you have to have it when you are engaged in any activity other than driving (or recently getting on a plane). I got through about the first 50 years + of my life with no need for any ID for anything. Even crossing the US border from neighboring countries and the Caribbean Islands required no passport.

We will all live to regret it if we don't get back away from a papers please culture.

Also, Sat Cong wrote: "It's a start, better then we have now."

It is a start down the path toward totalitarianism when citizens are required to carry papers in their daily lives. And that includes all citizens, naturalized or native born.

    I have a solution.
Immigrants love Mexico. I can tell because they wave the Mexican flag and speak the Mexican language.
Let's require the same for an immigrant here that Mexico requires of immigrants there. Simple, huh? You want the U.S. to be like Mexico, how could you argue with this?

Okay, you need to have identification on you at all times, you need a visa to work. Happy now?

Don't like it? Complain to Mexico. They must be racist hate mongers.

Anybody who is against this has never spent considerable time on the border.
