Nephew graduation and going into the Navy, gift ideas?

My nephew is graduating high school and going into the U.S. Navy. I'm looking for graduation gift ideas and suggestions. Something he can maybe use and keep while in the Navy.

Yeah I realize I mis-spelled nephew in the title, can't seem to change it. Ooops!

What is his MOS going to be? For a good general graduation present I like to give a quality pocket knife or a good pair of binoculars. They are both items that people seem to keep for years, and remember who gave them the gift each time they use it.

    Lightbulb Flag & display box

I arranged, through my congressman, to have a flag flown over the US Capital on the day each my son and a number of relatives reported for duty/bootcamp.

My son, subsequently had his flown at every permanent Stateside duty station, a few training commands, and occasionally when deployed.

That flag & a display box is a treasure.

I assume they still fly them over the Capital.

well, nothing's going with him to boot camp. Ask for his job rating (NEC) and where his 'A' school is. That'll help.

As a sailor myself, nothing beats a good flashlight and a 'digit' tool (read: multi-purpose....Gerber, SOG, Leatherman, etc.).

A quality zippo, multi-purpose tool, or a good watch. I've been eyeing this watch for my self. All nice, under $100, and can go any where he goes.

If you go with a flashlight, which is a great idea, I would stick with AAA/AA batteries. Something common that he can find on ship or deployed.

A mag-lite with different colored lenses. When on a ship, EVERYBODY has a flashlight, and the different colored lenses will allow him to use it when lights out is announced. A zippo is something he probably will buy at every duty station as a rememberance (wish I still had all of mine.)

If he goes Boatswainsmate, get him a KA-Bar. When you're handling lines and you need a knife, you really need a knife.
