Thumbs down I <3 Government efficiency

    ^
    I lie.

Last month I guess they put road cones up along my street for a yearly street cleaning. I was inside all day and didn't see them. Long story short, the following morning I got a $15 dollar ticket for being parked "illegally". No biggie, my wife dropped a $15 dollar check off, with the ticket in the after hours box and that was that... or so I thought.

Fast forward to today. I get a certified letter in the mail saying I am being summoned to traffic court for failure to pay my ticket, and now the fine has quadrupled.

Obviously I was shocked because I thought all was said and done. Apparently not. I looked at our online bank account, and sure enough the check was never cashed, nor was it ever cleared. All my wife has is the carbon copy of the check...

I called and left a message with the courthouse since they are closed today... I really don't know what to do now....

    Any advise would be appreciated.

Go talk to the prosecutor before your case is called and show 'em what proof you have - the carbon copy. A reasonable prosecutor will drop it and you'll just pay the $15.

Handcuff, shackel yourself and have your wife drive you to the nearest JAIL!

Seriously... what gasmitty said is your best bet. Since it was "lost in the mail" and not sent certified, be prepared to pay 4X.

hopefully you have checks that were written after the lost check,so you can show a date it was sent before, and that you didn't just write a check to try to beat the rap

Ask for them to reset the court date. The check will probably clear before the new date comes up and then you can get it dismissed.

Then you are just out the $15 and not the $60.

If there was no notice that the street was going to be closed, I'd fight the whole thing.

They technically do... the kicker is it is usually in section 12C of the newspaper or something... and that is it. I mean even a flier a week prior in your door with affected streets would be nice.

Call the prosecutor...if you are polite and reasonable and have proof of payment, they will just let you off with the 15

I talked to the lady at the court house and she told me this happens quite a bit. I just have to go before the judge and state my case and 9 times out of 10 he will waive the additional fees and only make you pay the orginal fine.

    I hope :)
