When each event is a matter of life and death for a small country like Israel, it's never a good idea to back down. If it weren't for Israel's presence in the middle east I think we would have a lot more trouble to contend with. I just think our government should quit trying to rein them in. It's not like our record of dealing with foreign affairs is all that great.

If the relief was food for the people, then what they did was evil.

There are/were standard operating procedures AKA acceptable methods have been in place in order to to make humanitarian, food, and medicine deliveries.
    They were ignored.

    unklfungus: From the article:
Before the ships set sail from waters off the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus on Sunday, Israel had urged the flotilla not to try to breach the blockade and offered to transfer the cargo to Gaza from an Israeli port, following a security inspection. (underline added by Scott)
It would seem to me, that if the folks on the ships had honorable intentions, they would have let Israel inspect the cargo--if they had consented, but asked for UN Observers, Israel might have agreed. Hamas-a Terrorist organization, is in control of the Gaza strip. Israel, (it seem rightly so to me) is concerned about weapons and ammo being smuggled in to Hamma under the guise of "humanitarian relief."

An Al-Jazeera reporter on one of the Turkish ships said the Israelis fired at the vessel before boarding it. The Israelis, who had declared they would not let the ships reach Gaza, [bold & underline added by Scott] said they only opened fire after being attacked by activists with sticks, knives and live fire from weapons seized from the Israeli commandos.

"On board the ship we found weapons prepared in advance and used against our forces," declared Israel's deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon.

"The organizers' intent was violent, their method was violent and the results were unfortunately violent. Israel regrets any loss of life and did everything to avoid this outcome."
What part of "Don't bring your ships here!" did they not understand??

If you are going to pull on a tigers tail you need to have a plan for dealing with the teeth as well. Clearly the blockade runners did not have such a plan and they got a bite taken out of them.

patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.

This was a bunch of people looking for an incident who then found one.

The "charities" sponsoring the blockade runners all have financial ties to organizations that the State Department has labeled terrorist organizations.

It was entirely legal for the Israeli Navy to board blockade runners and conduct security and contraband inspections.

I don't know what idiot decided that the boarding teams would carry paintball guns, but that's apparently what they were armed with.

This has been happening for thousands of years in that little piece of land known today as Israel.

The point was to break the blockade, which is exactly what the UN chief and other countries want. I don't have any sympathy for the blockade runners, and I think the Israelis used far more restraint in their response than they should have.

The next time they try to run the blockade, the ship should be sunk and then pick up the survivors.
