    Modern Marvels Failures episode

Anyone catch modern marvels last night? There were talking about great engineering failures over the years and did an interesting segment on military weapons. They talked about some french machine gun that jammed constantly, a remote controlled exploding mini talk, and then they talked about two things I thought really were huge FAILS. The 13mm gyrojet rocket hand gun and the m65 nuclear rifle. The gyrojet was a funny one. The m65 was scary though. Fired a nuclear warhead but could only shoot the projectile 3miles away, but had a blast radius beyond it.

Yeah I watched it last night. I thought the pistol was an interesting idea. The nuclear gun was scarry as heck. The fact that it even made to the prototype phase is amazing. They had to have a rough idea of the balistics and flight trajectory before it was made.

We always figured part of the firing procedure was to "open the fancy accessories box, remove and place the Medal of Honor around your neck, pull trigger". (There is another final step that involves bending over, but not on this forum! )

The gyrojet is a genius design, but the technology of the time wasn't (and might still not be) up to the task.

I would like to see greater use of low yield nukes. Anti-tank capabilities from a 40mm grenade launcher would be sweet.

I did like the idea of the gyrojet. It's applications it seemed were ideal at 100yards. With range like that I wonder why they didnt just turn it into a rifle application?

Caught that episode as well... Its amazing that so many "crazy" ideas made it as far as they did. I suppose you have to explore all the options, crazy or not, to come up with the next big thing.

I tell you some of the footage of the flying cars and the guys using the jet packs still amaze me. There was one in particular that showed a guy just absolutely booking it from a boat to landing on shore using a jet pack that was impressive. Too bad we still dont have any further advancements in personal propulsion.

I think it had accuracy problems in addition to the ones described on the show. Making ammo for it would be expensive too.
