old room mates what rent and i'm not tottaly convinced I owe what they say

Well that's not really their problem.

Have them explain how they got their numbers on what you owe.
You gave them $200, say good bye. If they want more, let them prove it in small claims court. It seems doubtful they'll be able to back their claims.

Worse that could happen, you find new friends.

Sounds like a place where maybe parties were held, say on a regular basis?

You owe them for any rent before the new guy moved in to take your place ,anything after that is between them,I am not a lawyer,did not sleep in a holiday inn express last night,but I watch Judge Judy a lot

I agree with duk. No I'm not a lawyer...but being a realtor gives me a basic understanding of leases. I think (depending on your state)that they have an obligation to mitgate damages..meaning they need to be diligent in finding a replacement. Which it sounds like they did. You might owe your portion of the rent, prorated of course, for the time prior to the replacement moving in. If you owe them money for personal loans and such...that's a different story.

Pay what you think you owe, tell them why, and move on with your life. You sound like a reasonable guy. Good luck...being a good dad is rewarding.

Check your name off the lease ... Pay them what you feel you owe them and tell them why ... Then tell them to suck it up and get on with their lives ...
