My Golden Retriever is probably closer to the first example! She's a lover, not a fighter.

A handicap friend of ours just purchased a 8yo Schutzhund 3 retired ***** as a helper/ companion animal. That dog is scary trained, she notices everything, and has the look of 'go ahead and try it, lets get it on'. The only downside is she only responds to commands in German.

That's funny Unklfungus, but those vuvuzela's are getting pretty obnoxious.
My ChowChow mix is not a "trained protection dog" but she notices EVERYTHING. Every detail matters to her. You can reward or correct her by the slightest gestures (which is a blessing and a curse, you can't lie to her)
It sounds like your friend has a good dog.
