Actually cluster headache sufferers are about 80% males, but migranes sufferers are about 65% female. You don't want to have either one regardless of your sex.

I used to get migraines more than I do now. I only got the visual effects one time - a sparkly spot in the middle of my vision that expanded to a circle, then an arc as it reached the edges of my vision. What I normally get before one is a sharp metallic taste in my mouth, then the insanely painful headaches. Laying down in a dark room after taking ibruprofen and a prescription medicine I'd have to look up usually takes care of it in a couple of hours. Not sure what the trigger might be.

My wife has gone to a headache specialist. When we counted it up, she was suffering headaches 28 days a month. Here is some info that we learned.
Headaches are misunderstood by most people including most Doctors. There are many factors that can trigger migraines. Her specialist recommended that she go on the Atkins diet and cut out all artificial sweeteners. After her first week on Atkins, she went 6 days in a row headache free. This was the first time she had been headache free in years!
Now, I am not a Doctor, I don't play one on TV. But I did watch my wife get her life back.

statol nasal spray is a godsend for my wife first she gets a buzz and within ten mins the migrane is down to a dull roar then she sleeps like a baby. also check out an osteopathic doctor if there are any in your area, they have a lot more tools than an md.

Well the wife took me back to the ER on Saturday afternoon. They did a lumbar puncture which was normal, more oxygen, more dilaudid, etc. Ended up being admitted and here I sit using the hospital's free wireless.

Getting dilaudid every 3 hours, along with decadron (powerful steroid), and Topamax. There is also talk about doing an MRI.

    This sucks.

Myelograms are in that ball park, and when they say do not lay down for 48 hours, make that a week, that is unless you want the king of all headaches...... and I mean the kind that you wish it was only a Migrane.....

my wife did the same thing. her spinal tap didnt work out so well, we ended up with an epidural before it was all done. hang in there. we never found definitively the cause for her migraine however she got in to a D.O. medical school program where and one of her profs started fixing her back alignment ( where her chiropractor couldn't) and migraines faded out.

Mine seem to be caused by stress, hunger, bright lights, those damn flickering florescent lights, and being over heated.

I keep Maxalt MLT in my briefcase, both cars, and at home. They melt in your mouth, so no need for water.

Symptoms vary - sometimes headache that throbs depending on movement, nausea, vomiting, flashing lights in my vision field, or even getting a "white out" where I cannot see at all for a few minutes.

The meds and/or Advil liquid gels seem to help. So does laying down in a dark, quiet place.

Gotta try the ice trick next time and see if that helps.

    Yup - migraines suck!

Well I spent 6 days in the hospital, underwent the spinal tap, CT scan, MRI, MRA, echocardiogram, and numerous other tests. The good news is I am healthy as a horse, the bad news is no one can explain why I have this crushing headache.

Cling to that good news. I was hospitalized with stroke-like symptoms (slurred speech, lack of muscle control on one side, inability to think clearly, etc). I had all those tests, too. They found some sort of lesions in my brain, but can't tell what they are. They're either residuals from years of hemiplagic migraines (which I was having every 28 days, like clockwork, from 16 to 28), or MS. They now cram me full of drugs (I think I'm on 4 different ones right now) to prevent them. I only get that variety of migraine every 3-4 months. I get the crushing-pain-please-kill-me migraines slightly more frequently. They suck, but at least they're not as scary as the other kind.

Oh, and I second the notion of cutting out artificial sweeteners. One thing I tried was to eliminate things from my diet. Eliminating Nutrasweet cut the frequency from monthly to quarterly.
