With the ability to quickly cause blindness, and the capability of burning skin, is this a good or bad thing for self defense? It's definitely 'less lethal/non lethal' however it could be construed to be an instrument of maiming, not appropriate for SD.

I would say less than ideal for self defense purposes. It's violent applications would be better suited to military and law enforcement, and probably not ideal for those either.
