iPhone app uses GPS and panic button to summon LEOs, EMS

    http://www.defrance.org/artman/publi...cle_2626.shtml

The app will connect you to a 24-hour monitoring station which will keep continuous track of you every ten seconds, with a direct line to law enforcement when you need it. The user need only activate the app’s panic alarm – or if stealth is a must, you can also activate a silent alarm which will be secretly sent to the messaging center – to alert the monitoring station that you’re in trouble. Not only can the app help in dangerous situations, but you can also subscribe to a EMS dispatch in case you need medical assistance right away.

Interesting. Could well be some special applications / needs where this would be handy. Unfortunately, when I have location services turned on, iPhone battery life is fairly poor. I wouldn't trust it to keep on going unless I also had auxiliary power for the iPhone.

Too, pretty price for the monthly monitoring fee.

I see this as a potentially useful app and service for very limited situations. Folks who live alone and keep the iPhone on a charger much of the time; folks who drive a lot and keep it plugged into the car battery; folks with special medical needs more than panic or fear of BGs.

umm, isn't this what programming 911 into the 1 button does? and with E-911 aren't they supposed to know where you are anyway? (not saying it works, but...)

How would you know that the app works for sure. I don't want to be in the middle of an hold up and push the button and the cops never show.

Even if they did show they would be ten minutes too late.
The only time I see this being useful would be in a medial emergency, as long as you are still conscious long enough to push the button.
