    Scanner buffs

Any other people in here that are trying to get into law enforcement or just regular people that are into home scanners to listen to police calls?

There's one running 24/7 here. I keep track of a few friends that way and knowing what's going on in the neighbor hood is priceless.

The only time I listen to a scanner is when I am visiting my girlfriends parents in N. AZ. Her dad is the assistant fire chief.

I got my fiance into it. She really got into after we heard our names on the scanner while watching a movie in the living room. ( I made a post about it earlier, neigbor saw a prowler run into our back yard, cops ran our plates before knocking on the door. BG got away)

I listen to my PD's transmissions regularly just to keep abreast of all that's going on in my immediate community. In the summer months, there's always patrol cars screaming here or there from about noon until well into the night. Been monitoring PD comms since Aug 2005. It's a part of SA in my book.

I have one. Wouldn't say I'm a "buff". I might turn it on late at night, when I'm off and bored...cant sleep.

I have a RadioShack PRO-96 digital trunking, 5500 channel handheld scanner.

We have one on 24/7, not much action in the area of town I live in now but in the old hood it was pretty fun to listen to. I have a brother-in-law who's a deputy so it's nice to have. Also I feel like the noise from it may indicate that someone is home and that someone may be a LEO so maybe it keeps some perps away.

Police in my neighborhood switch from the scanner to cell phones for all the good, hot, stuff so I don't listen anymore.

Every now and then I'll listen to my radio when I'm surfing the net, just to see whats up.

Many places are moving to digital trunked systems with heavy encryption. Makes it pretty tough to listen in. Most of my county uses such a system and you can't hear a thing.

I listen, as yesterday, every time I go in for a haircut as my barber shop has one.
