    Coyote vs 357mag

    photo.jpg

Went deer hunting again and this varmit has tried to sneak up on me a few times while walking to my stand. So yesterday, I was in the stand deer hunting and he got a little to close, about 30 yards. Planted a 125 grain Hornady XTP between his shoulder blades, and it was lights out. I have seen this one several times running with one darker in color, so next weekend, I'll be lookin for him too.

That's a fine-lookin' coyote. Most of the ones I saw while hunting back in CT were mangy, scruffy-looking things that just invited being shot.

Good shootin Gman. The healthy ones usually have better coats in the winter. That one looks pretty good.

Yes, I was suprised how nice the coat was. It probably went about 40 pounds. Had a full belly too. The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife dept has been encouraging us to take them out. Rabbits have all but disappeared.

Maybe bring a couple calls to your stand for when the deer are slow?

Great idea! Like this morning was dead as it gets. A billion squirels, but not a deer anywhere, and it was what I thought would be the perfect morning. Maybe I have stumbled on a new sporting adventure...handgunning for coyotes?

    Gman,
Should you foget the calls there is an alternative. By forcefully smooching (kissing) you palm you can imitate the sound, with a little practice. It is difficult to get the volume of a call, but it is better than nothing. Good hunting.

Maybe If I took Mrs G I could make it sound better and louder.

I cheat a little. I use a Camp 9 and a cheap red dot at a measured 80 yards. It's a large tree that every coyote seems to need to pee on. I sit on a picnic table just at dusk and can get one or two a night.

I know this is contrary to your line of thought but I get my best results with 110grain hollow points.

Good job. We took a couple off of our property, and luckily I have not seen one in a couple years. I'm sure they are around though.

Nice shooting. I know you've been hunting deer with your .357 too. :) I have a friend in Georgia that took a doe with a .357 S&W 6" from 62 yards.
