I guess "Don't work" is not strickly correct. They are working great for Chertoff. They're just not very good at catching explosives...

We're all in favor of reducing violent crime. It's just that pro-gunners have a method that is proven effective. Anti-gunners don't.

No text. Sorry.
Basics are:
- New research shows that scanners won't uncover the type of bomb terrorists are using (report to be published this week)
- Another report was done back in March that suggested the same thing
- Some info is classified
- $170k per machine
- Scanners only show sharp edges, not round edges
- Someone could carry 4X the amount of explosives as the "underwear bomber" through the scanner and not be detected
- Etc...

I was able to watch the video. It is stunning in what it says. Basically the machines detect "edges." That makes sense as in theoretical information science information is conveyed by edges. What that means though is that shaped objects with rounded edges aren't being detected. I have no way to know if that is true or not, and am skeptical of the truthfulness of that aspect of the story, but if true, it is a very sad commentary on the judgment of those who chose to purchase these machines.
Even the Israeli security experts have said this...
http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/F...610/story.htmlA leading Israeli airport security expert says the Canadian government has wasted millions of dollars to install "useless" imaging machines at airports across the country.
"I don't know why everybody is running to buy these expensive and useless machines. I can overcome the body scanners with enough explosives to bring down a Boeing 747," Rafi Sela told parliamentarians probing the state of aviation safety in Canada.
"That's why we haven't put them in our airport," Sela said, referring to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport, which has some of the toughest security in the world.
Sela, former chief security officer of the Israel Airport Authority and a 30-year veteran in airport security and defence technology, helped design the security at Ben Gurion.

Typical government efficiency.
"Each worker carried his sword strapped to his side." Nehemiah 4:18
Guns Save Lives. Paramedics Save Lives. But...
Paramedics With Guns Scare People!
They work great for moving tax dollars from you and me to Michael Chertoff and Deepak Chopra (CEO of Rapidscan). Deepak donated the maximum to Obama's campaign and was a guest on the India trip.
Now the machines are selling like hotcakes.
Kinda' like Janet Napolitano selling fence to Arizona.
"FOLLOW THE MONEY"
I went through one recently. I had to take my wallet out. The machine either would fry my credit cards or didn't see through a man's wallet. I'm betting it doesn't see through a wallet, since TSA couldn't give a crap about what it does to the flying public.
I'm not so sure that it can't see shaped objects with rounded edges... seems like our private parts show up just fine.
But if the Israelis say it's crap, then THAT says something !
They know how to manage security.
