I'm a pilot, but have only flown small planes. But the aerodynamics mostly work the same.

I have no idea how he could have ended up in the dive in the first place, but if the plane was in an aerodynamic stall/spin, then pulling back on the yoke would make it WORSE. You have to counterintuitively push forward and increase throttle to build forward speed. In a stall, you'll be nose-down, but you'll be 'falling' instead of gliding, moving more down than forward. Once you gain enough forward airspeed for the wings to generate adequate lift, THEN you pull back (gently) on the yoke to level out and recover. If it was a spin, there's some rudder work involved, too. All of that is taught to commercial pilots in the US, but I can't speak for India. Perhaps he panicked, pulled back on the yoke, and froze up when that didn't work. It's still inexcusable.

"The plane and its 113 passengers were saved when the pilot, who’d gone on a bathroom break,.............

You just KNOW he had to go AGAIN right after that.

Battle Plan (n) - a list of things that aren't going to happen if you are attacked.
Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.
