Father-in-law joined the Navy as a direct result of Pearl Harbor, and my Great Uncle joined the Marines as a direct result as well.
Both saw heavy combat in the Pacific as a result. My Uncle was at Tarawa, Saipan, Wake Island and one or two other of the biggies as well as a few other of the lesser known in the island hopping campaign. My father-in-law survived two ships sunk. When people asked him what he did in the Navy, he said "I swam a lot!" Sadly, he passed away about 6 years before I met my wife so I never had the opportunity to meet him, but from the stories told by the family he was an incredible guy. We have a knife he made when he was 19. The blade is part of the decking of the ship and the handle is made from parts of the wreckage of the Jap Kamikaze plane which struck the ship.
My Uncle was a solitary man who never spoke much of the war. I had heard a few of the stories related to me from my grandmother and one of his other sisters over the years, but they were just stories. The day I went and told him that I had enlisted in the Corps, is the only time I ever heard any stories directly from his mouth. He carried a lot of demons with him to his grave, that's for sure.
So this day has always been a memorable day for me. Not only because I'm a USMC veteran, but also because of family ties to the war.
