Scientists trying to clone, resurrect extinct mammoth
The scientists say they will extract DNA from a mammoth carcass that has been preserved in a Russian laboratory and insert it into the egg cells of an African elephant in hopes of producing a mammoth embryo.

Two thoughts,
First, they once made some movies about a similar experiment on an island, it didn't turn out so well.
Second, I have long thought that wooly mammoth would be delicious.

Very cool. I love Buffalo burgers. I wonder what else we can resurrect so that we can eat it?

It might be a good step in the world food crisis.

The Wooly Mammoth like other Pleistocene era animals died out as a result of climate change, but not a man made change.
They were actually hunted by humans using the 1911's of their day, flint tipped spears thrown by hand in close proximity. Possibly a very dangerous occupation considering their size. I'd say a few Ice Age hunters went to see the "Great Spirit" sooner than they wanted when trying to put Mammoth on the table.
It would be interesting to see one "resurrected." There was talk of taking the frozen egg and sperm cells of a Mammoth, and insert the fertilized thing into a modern Elephant to see what would be created. Then again, messin' with nature may be a bad thing.

That would be great if they could actually do it.

I remember those movies...and no, things didn't turn out well at all.
Not only delicious, but think how warm a wolly mammoth coat would be!!

I hadn't thought of the coat aspect, but you are on to something.
I remember from a college anthropology class that like the oldest man made structure that had been found was made out of wolly mammoth parts. The threshold to the door was made out of the tusks. That would be a conversation starter.

Kind of off the topic but it kind of goes with "resurrecting" an ancient living thing.
A few years back, some hikers discovered the frozen corpse of a Neolithic age man in the mountains on the border of Austria and Italy. He was perfectly preserved to the point he still had frozen body fluids. Now comes the scary part.....
Some European lady volunteered to be impregnated with his sperm to produce his child!
That my friends is just off the chart! The Mammoth thing doesn't sound too bad after this one, eh?
