Wow: Man Answered the Door Holding a Pistol!
I posted this in the "Off Topic and Humor" section, wasn't sure exactly where to place it.
I work as a Real Estate Appraiser for a local Gov't official. As I was out the other day visiting properties for data collection, I knocked on the door of a manufactured home.
When the homeowner came to the door, he was holding a Ruger LCP in his right hand, pointed sort of downward, kind of indirectly at me.
I guess the "look" of surprise on my face made him think twice and he lowered it. He saw my indentification badge on my jacket and said "Oh, I know who you are."
He still had the pistol in his hand and said, "I didn't scare you did I?"
I quickly answered, "No, my wife has a Ruger LCP too and carries it everywhere it's legal to do so with her permit."
We are not allowed to carry while at work, so I'm out doing my job unarmed. It was a pleasant visit though, they are nice people, they have just had some dirtbags come to their property recently and have had some break in's to their detached garage.

There are some here who would have answered, No, you didn't scare me. That's an LCP and only shoots .380s.
lololol (ok, bad joke).
I don't know about the whole, "see my gun" routine... that doesn't seem right. Although when I see that car with white shirts, ties and pamphlets pull in the driveway, I am often tempted.

I would question the need and the wisdom of showing the pistol on opening the door. First, yes indeed, it will frighten someone. If you are too afraid to open the door don't. Second, it leaves the person holding the gun vulnerable to an exaggerated false claim of aggravated assault.
A better way, hold it in your hand but behind your back, then when you know all is OK, slide it into a rear pocket.

In addition, there are those who are not frightened or intimidated by a handgun. Generally, I prefer surprise over intimidation, unless I'm holding a boomer (shotgun).

+ 2.... I believe that would be a better way. Right behind your gunhand side thigh.

I've answered the door like that before. Someone shady, dogs going nuts, wouldn't leave...etc. I had a Sig 220 behind my leg.
Usually I OF around the house, so I guess it's the same effect

I would probably just tell the guy, "pays to be careful, doesn't it" ... and then began talking to him.
You knock on my door, if I answer it..... you'll find a gun in my hand.

Back where I used to live, I always answered the door at night with my gun held behind my back. I also opened the door only far enough to see out and kept my left foot against the bottom of it. Where I live now, I have had less visitors than I can count on my fingers knock on my door in the 5 years I've lived here. When they do come I can see them before I get to the point of answering the door.

I always answer the door with a gun in my hand, even if it's the police at the door.
