    Can you identify this knot?

This knot holds very firmly. It's not a square knot.

Fisherman's knot. FAR superior to a square not.

Try YouTube - lots of instructional knot Vids on there. I've learned a few from there searching for paracord related stuff.

It looks to me like a blood knot.
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

A blood knot has both ends in the center rather than at opposite ends.

    There's also a one and a half fishermans/grapevine knot.

The be all end all of knot tying websites. Animated knots by Grog. Great site.

Animated Knots by Grog | How to Tie Knots | Fishing, Boating, Climbing, Scouting, Search and Rescue, Household, Decorative, Rope Care,

I'm going with fisherman's too. It's the basis for the prussic loop that climbers use to ascend a rope. It's a section of rope tied into a loop with a triple fisherman's knot. You can ascend a rope vertically with a couple of them, or hang from a rope with one. Both of which I have done. A very solid knot.

That's a well tied knot too. Good rope. If the ends were not welded nicely and it was sloppy then the answer would be different. In that case, the answer to "Can you name this knot?" would be "A frayed knot."

yes, In the field if I need to atach a fly line to backing I use it... not as good as a nail knot but easier to do on the side of a river or in a rocking boat....

You're right, it was a fisherman's knot. I was able to pry apart the two halves once I looked up how this knot is tightened. For some reason it was much more difficult to pry apart the two halves then the other fisherman's knots I tied even after cinching them up very tightly.
