Local Sheriff Department's Brand New Dodge Charger Explodes into Flames - PIC

A Deputy Sherrif here in Oregon was driving fast while responding to an emergency in his brand new Dodge Charger ( only 6,000 miles on the vehicle ), when smoke erupted in the rear of the vehicle. The officer stopped, and got his fire extinguisher out and tried to put out the flames. Another local officer arrived, and he also used his extinguisher on the car too.

However, they were both unable to stop the flames, which eventually consumed and destroyed the vehicle. Fortunately, no one was injured.

What sort of malfunction could cause something like this to happen? The vehicle had a value of $36,000

Goodness. He shouldn't have run over that cigarette butt. You know will void his warranty. Oh, maybe that is only with Mercedes.

Shouldn't have bought a Dodge to start with. Actually, a friend of mine had his Intrepid patrol car do the same thing a few years back. The rear end got too hot during a high speed chase.

Looks like it started in the trunk.

Could have been anything...a flare going off, a cigarette butt flicked into an open trunk, a battery popping, the list is endless.

Hit something in the road, punctured the gas tank, gas ran down onto the hot rear end.

Patrol cars have so many things that could start a fire...all kinds of electrical. Road flares, batteries. Really could have been anything.

That's disappointing. I watched "Bullit" at the drive-in, when it first came out, sitting in my new 68' Charger with my shoulder holster on.

Many years ago a local Fire Chief's car caught fire in the Fire Dept. parking lot. It turned out that when the radio gear was installed a wire somehow got clipped and caused a hot spot under the carpet. This could be the same type of deal.
