I had a paper route when I was 12. There was this one old man in particular I delivered to. He lived alone and everyday as I brought the paper up to his front door, he would come out to greet me. We'd stand there for a few minutes and he'd ask me about school and girls and things. And he'd tell me about his adventures as a soldier in WW I, showing me his left hand with only 3 fingers ~ the other two were blown off by a mortar shell. As I left him there each afternoon, he would wave good-bye with that mangled hand and say, "Rally round the flag my friend, rally round the flag."
About a year after I stopped delivering papers, I heard he died. There was no wake for him, but the priest at my church did arrange for a funeral. I remember the owner of the hardware store was there. And another older fellow wearing a military uniform. And then there was me.
Nobody knows this, but here it is 30 odd years later. And on each Veteran's Day, I always take time out to place a small American flag on his grave and whisper, "Rally round the flag my friend, rally round the flag."
"So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause."

Nice story. At our old house, we had a flagpole -- your story reminds me that I need to get one put up at our new house.
These damn HOA's don't let you do anything here.

Nice story! It reminds me of the a few old timers I knew while growing up. They were former soldiers and very patriotic. They use to say, “there is more to being a citizen than just being born here and giving 4 years to your country is a small price to pay." Obviously, they made an impression on me.
I love those type of stories ! thanks .......
Reminds me of my grandfather and his war buddies.
It comes a time in your life when you run across someone you should have never @#$$% with. Allow me to introduce myself!
May God Bless all of our Honorable vets from all conflicts. I remember the vet that most impressed me was a suvivor of the Battan Death March. One fine gentleman.
Very nice story. It's good to hear that this war hero has someone to remember him every year. There should be more people like the two of you on this earth. God bless.

It is better to have your gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
You cannot choose the conditions for a gunfight, so train in all conditions!
Great story. Makes me think of all the old veterans I know/knew. Sad to see an old guy go alone.
