Anyone have a blue heeler?
I'm not much for internet chat, really, but I figured I'd throw it out there. I have been wanting a dog, and grew up with two great hound mutts. I've spent some time on ranches in Colorado and grown to love the complete obedience and intelligence of the herding dogs out there. I've seen 6 week old pups staying, coming, and doing a half decent job at herding cattle.
So I've been looking into a blue heeler. I would really rather rescue one. I've been reading on them and most pages stress the need to be involved in training the dog, get it lots of physical and mental exercise, and make sure that you are the leader and not it. They tend to be one person or certainly one family dogs. I want a dog that is smart enough to get me a beer out of the fridge, walk by my side without a leash, let me know if someone is trying to break in, but also not bite some little kid just because it wants to pet it.
Most of what I can find is written about people who love blue heelers, not people who have had bad experiences with them. So have you had or known one? Love it? Did it not work out?
Another consideration is my wife wants a brittany spaniel. The heelers, from what I have read, can be domineering and aggressive toward other dogs. That would not be ok. We are thinking of getting the spaniel first and the heeler later, so it is more likely to accept the other dog since its the new guy.
If I determine the breed isn't right for me, I may travel to a certain ranch in Nebraska where they raise some dogs that are a cross of 5 kinds of heeler and a border collie, and get one of those. I've known several and they are a smart, obedient dog with the laid back, sweet demeanor of a mutt. I'd really rather get a dog that needs a home, and will be destroyed otherwise. There's a lot of good dogs out there, I know a lot just need an owner willing to put in the time and effort.
R U interested in a Blue Heeler? Trying to find a good home for my baby girl Bella.
Recently decided to go back to school and be a full time student, my husband is in the military. We have a wonderful girl heeler that needs more exercise and excitement than we can provide. She is smart, but needs some good training. We would love to find her a home that would provide her with love and hours of entertainement. Please let me know if you are still interested.
