A somewhat as an aside story:
In New York, at least several decades ago, security guards were required to wear a square badge. The story I got from a retired NYPD detective in 1978 was that it had to do with a private investigator, who was digging up dirt on Nelson Rockefeller, having a police looking badge and some interviewee later saying he/she thought the person was a real detective and that was the only reason he gave the info he/she did. This resulted in the square badge mandate, although I clearly recall seeing New York Times security guards with an NYPD looking shield.
