Maybe someone on the anti-sheepdog side can tell me again why only LEO's should have firearms... (rhetorically put)

Call to 911 warned of Memorial Day shooting in Roanoke | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

Almost a half-hour before Jennifer Carter Agee was shot to death on Memorial Day, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office was warned that her sheriff's deputy ex-husband had an assault rifle and was driving to Salem to kill her.

But Sheriff Ewell Hunt told his dispatch center not to issue a "be on the lookout" alert to other law enforcement agencies, saying he would take care of the situation himself, according to a sheriff's office radio call log.
    Keep reading, it gets worse.

I guess the Sheriff was trying to do a quasi-friend a favor... looks like that was definitely a bad idea. I think there are some cases where you just have to separate your duty as a LEO and your personal relationships. Unfortunately the Sheriff did not recognize this situation as one of those cases.

Condolences to the family and friends of the woman and a speedy recovery to the wounded LEO. If someone wanted to harm me, I would rather be notified myself, so I could do my own BOLO. This incident will probably get more media attention than all the muslim honor killings and spousal murders by civilians.

This has nothing to do with the "blue wall" or blue line. It was a guy that went nuts and killed his ex wife. It happens everyday, several times a day. The only thing the fact of him being a deputy adds to the story is sensationalism. Nothing more.

rather than alert those in the field who may have been able to intervene, Sheriff Hunt said he would do it himself.
he chose to not broadcast a warning
he went against common sense and probably the rules to protect a comrade.
that may be admirable in some cases; in this case it cost lives.

one can not both say officers are special in their being officers and than say they are people too.
if they are to be held to a higher standard than they must comport themselves at that higher standard.
even when it means that it is one of their own that they are on the look out for.

many do 'favors' for each other...and i will add, in the business world. but if they are found out and if those actions went against the law; there are fines and punishments handed down
in law enforcement, these people are indeed special cause their favors may carry the weight of life and death. business as usual does not work here.

According to a Franklin County Sheriff's Office radio log, police learned of Monday's brewing trouble with an 11:07 a.m. call from Julia Angell, a Roanoke sheriff's deputy who married Jonathan Agee after his 2005 divorce from Jennifer Agee.

Angell said that Agee had left their home in Boones Mill in his patrol car with an assault rifle, saying he was going to Salem to kill his ex-wife.

    Desparate people do desparate things.

This however, as Sixto said is the act of an insane person.

I cannot, for the life of me understand how someone can do this.
I understand someone walking in on your spouse in bed with someone ,and flipping out.
But to consciously hunt them down and do this,,,,,,,,?

I don't think this will end well for Sheriff Hunt.

I think this (in bold) is what brought about the comments about the blue line/wall. Crazy people do crazy things and in this case the fact that it was an officer isn't really the big deal.

The "big deal" here is that the Sheriff was warned of a potential homicidal maniac on the way to murder his wife. He was informed by a reliable source (a fellow officer and spouse of the BG) who gave him numerous details. Those details were specific enough to warrant action. There is no doubt in my mind that the Sheriff knew what was going on but decided to "keep it in the family". That decision cost a woman her life.

I have to wonder if his concern wasn't personal, in trying to protect the image of "his" department.
