The Honor of being a Veteran
I just read this quote and liked it so much I thought I'd share it here:
"A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it."

All veterans, both past and present, do understand this. Some people will never understand it.

I like the quote... but I wish they'd stop asking us to stand up at ball games and such. I hate being a spectacle.

I agree with you SIXTO. I did it because I wanted to serve, not because I wanted to be continuously recognized.

As I remember the Army Recruiter didn't really make that part clear.

When that happens, I just remain seated. (Then congratulate myself on being modest

Same here, it was an honor and privilege to have served.

LOL, so do I. But without fail, my 7 year old always says as loud as he can "DAD! STAND UP! Maybe you'll win something"
He doesn't get my reply just yet when I tell him we already have. One day he will when he looks back.

The church I attend does the same thing every Memorial Day and Veteran's Day service. I'm about ready to not attend those weekends because I feel so self concious. I'm proud of my service and that of my sons, but I didn't do it to be recognized. I appreciate that they are doing a simple gesture to recognize the members who are vets, but...

Although I completely understand what you are saying, another part of me says that I'm not standing for myself to be recognized, but rather to let young people see that many of the adults around them HAVE served and are proud to have done so...and perhaps help develop a tinge of teenage patriotism. Just a different prospective I guess.

I think this sums it up real well. I don't like for people to look at me and honor me for anything I have done, I'd rather they honor people like the man whose name is on my bracelet. He paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
